How to Set Up a Mobile Hotspot And Share the Internet Connection in Windows 10

With Creators Update sharing the Internet connection became even more easy in Windows 10. Now you can quickly set up sharing of your wired or wireless connection and instantly turn it on or off when you want to. I mean you don’t have to use command line anymore because AP settings came to Windows 10 GUI. The Mobile Hotspot (software Access Point) feature appeared in Action Center. Here is the step-by-step guide on how to set up the Internet sharing.

The only thing you need to have in your PC to make Mobile Hotspot feature work is a wireless network card. Thus, you can plug a simple USB Wi-Fi module in to use the feature on your desktop.

Set Up Internet Sharing in Windows 10 (Creators Update and Later)

  1. Open the “Action Center” (Ctrl+A):
  2. Right-click on “Mobile Hotspot”.
  3. Select “Go to Settings”:
  4. Click “Edit” to modify your network name and password (wireless security key). For sure, you would like to give your AP at least a familiar name:
  5. Specify a network name and a password. Don’t forget to assign a strong password! Click “Save” to apply new settings:
  6. Besides that you can select which connection to share: wireless or wired ethernet. In our case: we would not create a hotspot if we had another working Wi-Fi here. So we select to share our ethernet connection from the laptop.
  7. The last step. After you configured everything you can turn on your Mobile Hotspot:

Now all your devices having a wi-fi can connect to your software AP and use your Internet connection:

Remember! Once you have configured your hotspot you may toggle it on or off from Windows 10 Action Center whenever you wish:
