“The User Name or Password is incorrect. Try again” in Windows 10. How to fix

Today we will talk about the error The User Name or Password is incorrect. Try again that happens quite often on Windows 10 at logon. The second confusing thing is when you click OK you see two identical user accounts (yes, with exact same names) on the welcome screen and you don’t know which one you need to select. So here is about the known reason of the problem and how to fix the error “The User Name or Password is incorrect. Try again”.  Here is how the error looks like:

The error happens because of a glitch in Windows 10. You will face it in case if you have set up the auto-logon (like we wrote here) and after that you changed the name of your computer:

How to fix “The User Name or Password is incorrect. Try again” error

  1. Type your password (or login and password) to log in to ANY account of the two.
  2. Press Win+R.
  3. Type netplwiz (or control userpasswords2).
  4. Hit Enter:
  5. Turn on password request if it is turned off. Just check the flag Users must… and click Apply.
  6. After that turn it OFF again: Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer

That’s it! Unfortunately you will have to follow these steps each time after you decide to change your computer’s name while the auto-logon feature is enabled.
